One of the biggest nights of saxophone ever seen in this country (just like a repeat of the hugely successful Manchester Lane – Stax of Sax 1996)

Monday 4th July at  LIMERICK ARMS  Corner of Park St and Clarendon St,  South Melbourne  (only a few minutes away from the Festival Venues)

Show starts at 7.30pm  Dinner available from 6pm (or come for drinks straight after the festival finishes on Monday) A great place to chat with your peers and friends or just soak up the music and unwind.

The Limerick has a fantastic contemporary menu plus traditional pub meals. All at very reasonable prices.
Bringing together well loved performers from the jazz, rhythm & blues, rock and roots scenes (more artists to be confirmed soon).

Massed Ensembles

A signup form is now available for participation in the massed ensembles during the Festival. Michael Duke (NSW) will be conducting the saxophone ensemble, while Charles West (USA) will be taking the clarinet group. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with these consummate musicians, play some great music and make some new friends.

There will be rehearsals on the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday each morning with a final public concert held in room 113 on the Wednesday. These groups were a big hit and very well attended at the last Festival.

Akemi Schubert

Akemi was born in Tokyo and began piano lessons at age 3. She graduated from the prestigious Musashino Music College in 1985 and studied further with Deborah Sobol of the Chicago Chamber Musicians. In 1990, Akemi attended chamber music classes of clarinetists John Yeh (Chicago Symphony Orchestra) and Michael Arringnon (Professor-Paris Conservatoire). She has taught and performed in Japan and Australia in both Concerto and Recital roles, and in collaboration with Hiroyuki Iwaki’s Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa in its chamber music series from 1990-1995.

In 2002, she appeared in a live broadcast on the ABC with her trio Ensemblinx, and performed with her husband, clarinetist Robert Schubert at the Australasian Clarinet & Saxophone Conference in Brisbane in July of that year.

Akemi is a sought after teacher and accompanist and is regularly engaged at the Victorian College of the Arts, the University of Melbourne Faculty of Music, and Monash University Music Department.

Nicole Canham

Churchill Fellow, Nicole Canham works in mainstream classical performance specialising in chamber music, and collaborates with a range of artists from outside the world of music – theatre, film, photography, visual art and dance – exploring connections between artists and audiences. Recent work has included concerts with the quartet Clarity, participation in Chamber Made Opera’s performance and recording of Helen Gifford’s Exile, launched as an i-pad application, and residencies with new media artist Sarah Kaur at Punctum Live Arts, Victoria and the Mexican National Centre for New Music and Sonic Arts. Engagements in 2010 included concerts with Claude Delangle for Henri Selmer, Paris as part of their Concerts at La Fontaine series, performances at the UNAM Esceula Nacional de Musica Clarinet Festival, the 12 Nights Festival of electro-acoustic music, Miami and the Morelia International Film Festival. In November she performed with duo partner Sarah Kaur (new media artist) at the Visiones Sonoras Festival, Mexico. Nicole is currently engaged in a major commissioning project of new works for tarogato and electronics, and in the last 12 months has premiered 10 new works in concerts in Australia, France, Mexico and the USA. She is currently engaged in an international collaborative project called Hourglass, working with a team of Mexican and Australian composers, video and installation artists. With the company Polyartistry she is developing a project involving crowdsourcing and experimental opera in partnership with Opera Australia.

After completing a Bachelor of Music Degree in Performance at the Australian National University School of Music, Nicole undertook post graduate study with renowned French clarinettist Philippe Cuper at the CNR de Versailles, obtaining her Prix de Perfectionnement and returning to Australia in 2003. Specialising in chamber music performance and presentation, Nicole has performed at festivals around Australia, including The Castlemaine State Festival, Four Winds, The Camden Haven Festival, The Adelaide Fringe Festival, The Darwin Youth Festival and the National Folk Festival. With the quartet Clarity, Nicole has performed internationally throughout Belgium, France and the UK, making their international debut at St-Martin-in-the-Fields. Her orchestral experience includes performances as part of the Australian Youth Orchestra Camerata, and with the Sydney Symphony, Tasmanian Symphony, Canberra Symphony and Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestras. Nicole’s discography includes recordings for The Anthology of Australian Music, and the Tall Poppies and Move labels. She has been a Move Records artist since 2005.

Mitchell Leigh

Mitchell is a graduate of both the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. His teachers were Max Olding in Brisbane and Robert Silverman in Canada.

He has established a national reputation as a performer, mainly in the area of accompaniment and chamber music. He has worked with many of Australia’s finest instrumentalists and has also toured and appeared in recital with many international artists. He has accompanied at numerous conferences and festivals throughout Australia. Currently he is a staff member of the Qld Conservatorium of Music/Griffith University.

Although better known as an accompanist and chamber musician, Mitchell still performs in a solo capacity on occasion. He has been a prizewinner in numerous national piano competitions.

In his spare time he composes music, some of which has been performed and recorded.

Tinalley String Quartet

The Tinalley String Quartet has rapidly achieved recognition as one of the most exciting young quartets, not only in theivr home of Australia but also on the world stage.

Tinalley was awarded First Prize at the prestigious 9th Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2007 and the Grand Prize at the 2005 Australian Chamber Music Competition, now known as the Asia Pacific Music Competition.

From the Sydney Opera House to the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Quartet has performed to audiences around the world. International highlights have included appearances in Paris, Vienna Musikverein, Berlin Konzerthaus, Hamburg, Nurnberg, Luxembourg, Bremen Die Glocke, Frankfurt AlteOper, Baden-Baden, Utrecht, Vancouver, Calgary, San Jose, San Francisco, San Diego, Toronto and New York. In Australia, the Quartet has appeared in recital for the Melbourne Recital Centre, Sydney Opera House, Musica Viva Australia, and at many of Australia’s premier festivals, including the Port Fairy Festival; Perth International Arts Festival; Canberra International Music Festival; Huntington Festival and the Melbourne International Arts Festival.

The Quartet has premiered numerous works in Australia and North America, namely, quartets by American composer Joan Tower, Hungarian György Kurtág and Dutch composer Louis Andriessen. The Quartet has also engaged in several ‘crossover’ projects, bridging the world of jazz and classical. Tinalley has performed with Canadian Jazz Trio ‘Fieldtrip’ with whom it has recorded an album of original works for String Quartet and Jazz trio, and more recently has performed with English jazz pianist, Gwilym Simcock.

The Quartet has also collaborated with the Pavel Haas Quartet; English violist Caroline Henbest; Honens Laureate Hinrich Alpers; Australian clarinetists Paul Dean and David Griffiths and members of the Southern Cross Soloists and Australia Ensemble.

Formed in 2003 at The University of Melbourne, the Tinalley String Quartet has been mentored by many of the world’s finest quartets, including members of the Tokyo, St. Lawrence, Keller, Takàcs and Schoenberg String Quartets. Between 2005 – 2007, the Quartet studied at the International Musicians Seminar, Prussia Cove, United Kingdom; the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival as part of the Yale Summer School of Music; the St. Lawrence String Quartet Chamber Music Seminar at Stanford University and the Banff Centre for the Arts, Canada. In 2006 Tinalley was based at the Australian National Academy of Music as Visiting Young Artists.

The Quartet has been broadcast in Australia by ABC Classic FM and 3MBS FM while around the world their live recordings have been heard on CBC Canada, SRW2 and HR2 Kultur Germany, Radio France and Public National Radio, The Netherlands.

Tinalley was selected in 2007 as one of ‘Melbourne’s 100 Most Influential People’ in The Age and was nominated in the category of best newcomer in the 2008 Limelight magazine awards. Tinalley’s first commercial CD ‘Beloved of the Gods’ was released in 2009 by Melba Records to critical acclaim.

In 2011, Tinalley will launch its inaugural National Concert Season, presenting three programs at the Sydney Opera House Utzon Room, Melbourne Recital Centre, National Gallery of Australia in Canberra and Elder Hall at the University of Adelaide. The Series will include collaborations with violist Roger Benedict and cellist Li Wei Qin.

David Howie

David studied piano under Sonya Hanke and Gordon Watson as an under graduate, and then specialized in Accompaniment, studying with David Miller in Sydney at the Conservatorium of Music and Paul Hamburger in London, at the Royal Academy of Music.

He was Head of Keyboard Studies at Kings College in Somerset, England for four years before returning to Australia where he has lectured in accompaniment as a member of the Ensemble Unit since 1992 at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

He has performed throughout England, Europe, America and Australia, has given numerous live broadcasts and studio recordings for the B.B.C, Radio Luxembourg, A.B.C. television and radio and 2MBS FM.

Claude Delangle, Stanley Drucker, Kyle Horsch, Gordon Hunt, Peter Jenkins, Annalisa Kerrigan, Nick Parnell, Kamahl, Christina Leonard, James Nightingale, Dominica Matthews, Otis Murphy, Richard Sherman, David Wakeham, Marcel Luxon, Mark Walton and Asmira Woodward –Page, are some of the many wonderful artists from Australia and internationally that he has had the pleasure to perform with over the years.

He has recently teamed up with the current Head of Woodwind at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, saxophonist Michael Duke to make “HD Duo” an exciting new duo pioneering new Australian music for saxophone and piano. Their first CD “Australian Portrait “will be released this year ( 20011 ) , and they will be recording their second CD later in 2011, titled the “Fairer Sax” which will be music written entirely by female composers.

He leads a hectic, but enjoyable life fulfilling his role at the Conservatorium, teaching piano and accompaniment, as well as performing widely as an associate artist and chamber musician.

He loves cooking, sailing, playing and coaching soccer and his most treasured time is that spent with his wife and three boys…… and the dog!
